OVERVIEW
The Crazy Muley Ultra is Alberta’s only sand‑dune ultramarathon — a wild, sandy, hilly, and unforgettable challenge held near Edgerton in the heart of the province’s unique dune complexes. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, the event showcases a landscape unlike anything else in Alberta: rolling sand hills, loose footing, exposed prairie, and nonstop elevation changes that test even the strongest runners.
With distances of 50K and 25K‑ish, plus a new 25K‑ish 2‑person team event, the Crazy Muley Ultra offers something for both seasoned ultrarunners and adventurous newcomers looking to experience the region’s rugged beauty. Every course is a single loop, designed to highlight the area’s distinctive terrain and the stubborn, gritty spirit that inspired the race’s name.
THE RACE
The Crazy Muley Ultra starts and finishes at the Sand Dune Liquor Store parking lot in Edgerton, Alberta, setting the tone for a race that blends challenge, community, and celebration. From the first steps, runners are immersed in a landscape shaped by wind, sand, and rolling prairie.
The course features:
- Continuous rolling sand‑dune hills
- Loose sand that demands power and patience
- Singletrack, quad trails, and a mix of pavement and gravel roads
- Minimal shade and wide‑open prairie exposure
- Pink or blue Wainwright Runners pin flags marking the route
Both distances share the first half of the course before splitting into their own loops. The 50K includes two main aid stations plus additional water stops, while the 25K‑ish has one aid station and multiple water points to keep runners fueled.
New this year, the 25K‑ish 2‑man team race allows runners to split the course into two segments of approximately 16K and 11K, switching out at Aid Station #1 — a perfect way to experience the dunes without committing to the full distance.
